Caption formatter
Count characters and hashtags, keep your line breaks, and tidy the hashtags before you paste a caption into Instagram, TikTok or YouTube.
How to use it
- Choose the app you are writing for. This sets the character and hashtag limits.
- Write or paste your caption. The counters update as you type.
- Tick the clean-up options you want.
- Press Copy caption and paste it into the app.
Limits the counter uses
| Where | Characters | Hashtags |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | 5 |
| TikTok caption | 4,000 | No separate limit |
| YouTube Shorts title | 100 | No separate limit |
| YouTube description | 5,000 | No separate limit |
Last checked in October 2026. Instagram began limiting posts to 5 hashtags in December 2025 and rolled the change out gradually, so some accounts may still accept up to 30. You can change the number in the tool. Emoji can count as two characters in some apps, so leave a small margin if you are close to a limit.
What the clean-up options do
Remove spaces at the ends of lines
A stray space after the last word of a line is the usual reason a line break disappears when you post. This option removes them.
Protect blank lines with an invisible character
Some apps squeeze out empty lines between paragraphs. With this on, each empty line gets a character that looks blank but is not, so the gap survives. Try posting without it first. It is a real character, so each one counts toward the character limit.
Remove repeated hashtags
Keeps the first use of each hashtag and drops later repeats. #Mumbai and #mumbai count as the same tag.
Move hashtags to the end
Takes every hashtag out of the text and puts them together on the last line, which keeps the part people read tidy.
Keep the first hashtags
Removes hashtags beyond the limit, counting from the start of the caption. Put your most specific tags first.
Writing the first line
Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters of a caption and hides the rest behind “more”. The preview box shows where that cut falls, so you can make sure the opening line says what the post is about. Hashtags placed at the very start use up that space, which is one more reason to move them to the end.

Questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Five per post or Reel, counted across the caption and comments, since a change Instagram began rolling out in December 2025. Some accounts may still see the older limit of 30. The limit in the tool is adjustable for that reason.
Why do my line breaks disappear when I post?
Most often there is a space left at the end of a line. Remove the trailing spaces and the break usually survives. If your app still closes the gap, turn on the option that protects blank lines.
Is my draft saved?
Yes. Your draft is still here if you close the page and come back. Press Clear to remove it.
Does it suggest hashtags?
No. It counts and tidies the ones you write. Good hashtags describe the specific post, and only you know what that is.
Does it work for languages other than English?
Yes. Hashtags in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Arabic, Japanese and other scripts are recognised and counted.
