Video formats in plain words
The letters at the end of a video file name tell you less than you might expect. They name the container, which is the wrapper. The video and sound inside are compressed with codecs, and it is the codec that decides whether a device can play the file.
| Container | Usually contains | Plays on |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | H.264 or HEVC video, AAC sound | Almost everything, when the video is H.264 |
| MOV | H.264 or HEVC video, AAC sound | Apple devices. Mixed elsewhere |
| MKV | Anything | Computers and some TVs. Rarely phones |
| WebM | VP9 or AV1 video, Opus sound | Browsers and Android. Rarely elsewhere |
| 3GP | H.264 or H.263 video | Most devices |
This is why converting between formats is sometimes instant and sometimes slow. Moving H.264 video from a MOV or MKV wrapper into an MP4 wrapper is a copy, and takes about a second. Changing the codec, say from VP9 to H.264, means decoding and re-encoding every frame.
The codecs you will meet
- H.264 is supported by practically all phones, computers and TVs in use today. It is the safe choice for anything you send to other people.
- HEVC, also called H.265, gives the same quality in about half the space. Recent phones record it by default. Older devices and some apps cannot play it.
- VP9 and AV1 are used by web video. They play in browsers and on Android, and are uncommon elsewhere.
What these tools do not do
- They do not fetch videos from websites or apps. They work on files you already have.
- They do not read AVI, WMV, FLV or MPG files.
- They do not join clips together, add text or music, or crop the frame.

Questions
What is the best video format?
For sharing, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound. Nothing else plays as widely.
Will converting a video reduce its quality?
Not when only the container changes, which is the common case for MOV and MKV files with H.264 video: the video data is copied without re-encoding. When the video has to be re-encoded, some quality change is unavoidable. The tools use settings that keep it small, and each one tells you beforehand which of the two will happen.
Why is my video file so large?
Phone cameras record at a high bitrate so that nothing is lost. A minute of Full HD is often over 100 MB. The video compressor brings that down to a size you can send.
Can I convert a video on my phone?
Yes, on a current Android phone or iPhone. What a phone can convert depends on its browser, its memory and the codecs it supports, and the tool tells you if something is not possible. Re-encoding a long video is heavy work for a phone, so keep the screen on until it finishes.
