Compress image
Compress an image to make its file smaller. Pick a quality, or type the size in KB that a form or an email allows.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to compress an image
- Tap Choose pictures and select the files.
- Choose A quality, or choose A size limit and type the largest size allowed.
- Press Compress. The result shows the size before and after.
Compressing to a size in KB
Online forms often state a limit: a photo under 100 KB, a signature under 50 KB, a scan under 200 KB. Choose A size limit, type the number, and each picture is saved at the best quality that fits under it.
If the lowest acceptable quality is still too big, the picture is also made smaller in pixels until it fits, and the result tells you the new size in pixels. That happens mostly with large photos and very small limits. A 12 megapixel photo cannot look good in 20 KB at full size, but it can at 600 pixels wide.
| Limit | What usually fits |
|---|---|
| 20 KB | A signature or a small passport-style photo |
| 50 KB | A photo around 600 pixels wide |
| 100 KB | A photo around 1000 pixels wide |
| 200 KB | A photo around 1600 pixels wide, or a scanned page |
| 500 KB | A full-screen photo |
| 1 MB | A phone photo at full size, at medium quality |
These are typical. A picture with lots of fine detail, such as grass or gravel, needs more room than one with plain areas, such as sky.
Compressing to a quality
When there is no hard limit, choosing a quality is simpler.
- High is hard to tell from the original, and commonly halves a phone photo.
- Medium suits web pages, email and chat. Differences show only when zoomed in.
- Low is for when size matters most. Look for haze around sharp edges and text.
JPG or WebP
JPG opens everywhere and is what forms expect. WebP is usually a quarter to a third smaller at the same quality and keeps transparent backgrounds, but a few older programs and upload forms refuse it. If the picture is going to a form, use JPG. Transparent areas turn white in a JPG.
What is making the file large
Two things: the number of pixels and how carefully each is stored. A phone camera produces 12 to 50 million pixels, far more than a screen shows. Setting Size in pixels to 1920 before compressing often does more than any quality setting, with no visible loss on a screen. To choose exact dimensions, use resize image.
PNG screenshots and logos are a different case. Saving them as JPG blurs sharp edges. For those, compress PNG keeps them as PNG and reduces the colours instead.
Compressing saves a new file each time. Always start from the original, because compressing an already compressed picture adds damage without saving much.
Questions
How do I compress an image to 100 KB?
Choose A size limit, type 100, and press Compress. The picture is saved at the best quality that fits under 100 KB.
How do I compress a photo to 50 KB or 20 KB?
The same way, with a smaller number. For limits that small the picture is usually reduced in pixels as well, and the result says by how much.
Will compressing reduce the quality?
A little, by design. At High the loss is hard to see. The lower the quality or the size limit, the more it shows.
Does it change the picture's dimensions?
Not unless you choose a size in pixels, or a size limit that cannot be met otherwise.
Can I compress a PNG?
Here it is saved as JPG or WebP, which suits photos. To keep a screenshot or logo as PNG, use the compress PNG tool.
