HEIC to PNG

Convert HEIC to PNG to open iPhone photos on any computer and edit them without losing quality along the way.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Tap Choose HEIC photos and select one or more files.
  2. To keep the files manageable, consider choosing a smaller size in pixels.
  3. Press Convert to PNG, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.

PNG or JPG for an iPhone photo?

HEIC photos can be converted to either. They suit different purposes.

Choose PNG when the photo is a starting point: for retouching, for compositing in a design tool, for a print service that asks for PNG. Choose HEIC to JPG when the photo just needs to be opened, sent or uploaded.

Be ready for large files

HEIC is very efficient and PNG is not, for photographs. A photo that takes 2 MB on the phone can be 20 MB as a PNG. Ten photos become a 200 MB ZIP. If that is more than you need, set the size to Up to 2560 pixels or Up to 1920 pixels, which cuts the file to a fraction and is still more than a screen can show.

What is carried over

  • Every pixel of the main picture, at full resolution unless you choose otherwise.
  • The right orientation. The rotation stored with the photo is applied, so nothing comes out sideways.
  • Not the extras. Live Photo motion, depth data for portrait blur, and the date, camera and location details are left behind.

Leaving out the location is often welcome when a photo is going to be published.

Devices that can read HEIC

HEIC pictures are compressed with HEVC, a method that needs support from the device's hardware or system. Phones and computers from about 2017 onward generally have it. Use a current version of Chrome or Edge. Where a device cannot decode HEIC, the tool says so for each photo it had to skip, and trying on a newer device is the fix.

After converting

A PNG from here can go straight into an editor. To make it smaller without leaving PNG, use compress PNG. To cut it down to the subject, use crop image.

Questions

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

The PNG stores exactly what the HEIC decodes to, and adds no loss of its own.

Why are the PNG files so large?

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which takes far more room for a photo than HEIC or JPG. Choose a smaller size in pixels to reduce it.

Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?

JPG for sharing and uploading. PNG for editing or when a service specifically asks for it.

Does the PNG keep the location where the photo was taken?

No. Date, camera and location details are not copied.

My device could not convert the photos. Why?

It cannot decode HEIC. Try a newer phone or computer with Chrome or Edge.
