Merge PDF

Join two or more PDFs into a single file. Put them in the order you want, and every page is copied across exactly as it is.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to merge PDF files

  1. Tap Choose PDFs and select the files. You can add more afterwards with Add more files.
  2. Use the arrows beside each file to put them in order. The file at the top comes first.
  3. Press Merge PDFs, then Save PDF.

What happens to the pages

A PDF merger should leave your pages alone, and this one does: merging copies pages. Nothing is redrawn, converted or compressed, so text stays sharp and selectable, pictures keep their quality, and each page keeps its own size and direction. A Letter-size contract and an A4 invoice can sit in the same file, each at its true size.

Carried into the merged fileNot carried over
Every page, exactly as it wasBookmarks (the outline panel) of the original files
Text, fonts, pictures and drawingsThe ability to type into form fields, in some files
Page sizes and rotationDocument properties such as author and title
Links inside a page to web addressesLinks that jumped to another page of the old file

If the bookmarks or a fillable form matter, keep the original files as well as the merged one.

Typical uses

  • Applications. A cover letter, a CV and certificates sent as the single file a form asks for.
  • Scans. A scanner that saved each page separately, brought back into one document.
  • Expenses and tax. A month of receipts and statements as one file for an accountant.
  • Print jobs. Several documents sent to a print shop in one go, in the order they should be bound.

Getting the order right

Files are joined top to bottom, whole file after whole file. To interleave pages, or to drop a page from one of the files, merge first and then use reorder PDF pages or remove PDF pages on the result. To add only part of a file, cut it down first with extract PDF pages.

Files that cannot be merged

A PDF that is protected with a password, or that carries editing restrictions, cannot have its pages copied. The tool names the file so you know which one to deal with. Open it in the program that made it, save a copy without protection, and add that copy instead.

If the merged file is too large to email, run it through compress PDF.

Questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

There is no fixed number. The practical limit is your device's memory: dozens of ordinary documents are fine, while several files of hundreds of megabytes each may be too much for a phone.

Does merging reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied, not redrawn, so nothing is recompressed.

Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?

Yes. Each page keeps its own size and direction in the merged file.

Can I merge a PDF and a picture?

Turn the picture into a PDF first with JPG to PDF or image to PDF, then merge the two PDFs.

Why was one of my files refused?

It is protected with a password or with editing restrictions. Save an unprotected copy from the program that created it and use that.
