Fahrenheit to Celsius
To convert degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. Type a temperature to see it in degrees Celsius.
How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
For example, 75 °F is 23.9 °C. The formula is exact. Take away the 32 first, because the two scales start from different points, then scale the result by 5/9.
A quick way to do it in your head
Take away 30, then halve it.
- 50 °F: 20, halved is 10 °C. The true answer is 10 °C.
- 70 °F: 40, halved is 20 °C. The true answer is 21.1 °C.
- 90 °F: 60, halved is 30 °C. The true answer is 32.2 °C.
The shortcut is exact at 50 °F and within about 2 degrees across ordinary weather. Do not use it for a thermometer reading or an oven.

US oven settings in Celsius
American recipes give oven temperatures in steps of 25 °F. Ovens marked in Celsius usually move in steps of 10 °C, so the converted figure is rounded to the nearest mark.
| Fahrenheit | Exact Celsius | Set the oven to |
|---|---|---|
| 275 °F | 135 °C | 140 °C |
| 300 °F | 148.9 °C | 150 °C |
