HEIC to JPG
Convert HEIC photos from an iPhone or iPad to JPG, so they open on Windows, Android and anywhere else.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Tap Choose HEIC photos and select the files.
- Leave the format on JPG and the quality on High.
- Press Convert to JPG.
- Save one photo directly, or save several together as a ZIP.
What a HEIC file is
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since 2017. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG of the same quality, which is why Apple adopted it.
The catch is compatibility. Windows needs an add-on to open HEIC. Many Android apps, websites, printers and photo kiosks do not accept it at all. Upload forms for job applications, visas and marketplaces usually ask for JPG. Converting to JPG gets round all of this.
What you get
- Full resolution, unless you choose a smaller size.
- The right way up. The rotation stored with the photo is applied.
- A larger file. A JPG at High quality is typically bigger than the HEIC it came from. Choose Medium to bring it down.
- No location data. The date, camera details and location inside the HEIC are not copied to the JPG.
Which devices can convert HEIC
A HEIC photo is compressed with HEVC, the same method used for 4K video, and decoding it needs support from the device. Most phones and computers made since about 2017 have it. Use a current version of Chrome or Edge. If your device cannot decode HEIC, the tool tells you so for each photo it could not convert.
Stopping HEIC at the source
If you often need JPGs, you can change what the iPhone produces:
- To shoot JPG from now on: open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos will take about twice the space.
- To keep HEIC but send JPG: open Settings, Photos and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic. The phone then converts photos when it copies them to a computer.
Good to know
- Live Photos convert as the still picture only.
- A HEIC file holding a burst or several pictures converts as its main picture.
- To get PNG or WebP, change the format before converting.
- To put the photos in a document, use image to PDF.
Questions
Why can't I open HEIC photos on my computer?
Windows does not include HEIC support by default, and many apps have never added it. Converting the photos to JPG makes them open everywhere.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
A very small amount, because JPG is a less efficient format. At High quality the result looks the same as the original.
Why are the JPG files bigger than the HEIC files?
HEIC compresses about twice as well as JPG. The same photo at the same quality needs more space as a JPG. Choose Medium quality or a smaller size if the files are too big.
The tool says my device cannot decode HEIC. What now?
Try it on a newer phone or computer in Chrome or Edge. Alternatively, on the iPhone itself, share the photo by email or to the Files app, which usually sends it as a JPG.
Can I convert a whole folder of photos?
Yes. Select them all in the file picker. They are converted one after another and saved together in a ZIP.
