PNG to WebP

Convert PNG to WebP to make website graphics far lighter while keeping their transparent backgrounds.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Tap Choose PNG files and select one or more files.
  2. Choose High for artwork with text and sharp edges. Medium suits photographic pictures.
  3. Press Convert to WebP, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.

What WebP offers that JPG cannot

The usual way to shrink a PNG is to save it as JPG, and the usual problem is that JPG has no transparency. WebP has both: strong compression and a full transparency channel. A product cut-out or a logo with a soft shadow can be a fraction of its PNG size and still sit cleanly on any background.

How much smaller

It depends on the content. Photographic PNGs, such as product shots with the background removed, commonly shrink by 80 to 90%. Screenshots and illustrations shrink less, often by half. Very simple flat graphics with a handful of colours are already tiny as PNG and may gain nothing.

This conversion is lossy

WebP files made on this page use lossy compression at the quality you pick. That is where the big savings come from. It also means sharp edges and small text can pick up slight softness at lower qualities.

  • For screenshots, interface graphics and anything with lettering, use High.
  • For cut-out photos and textured illustrations, Medium is usually indistinguishable.
  • If the picture must stay pixel-exact, keep it as PNG and use compress PNG.

Where to use the result

WebP is at home on websites and in web apps, where every current browser displays it. It is a poor fit for files you hand to other people, since older desktop software, some upload forms and many email programs do not accept it. Keep the PNG as your master copy and treat the WebP as the version you publish.

Browser support for creating WebP

Chrome, Edge and Firefox can write WebP. Some versions of Safari cannot. If yours cannot, the page says so and nothing is saved. To go back from WebP to an editable PNG, use WebP to PNG. For photos that start as JPG, see JPG to WebP.

Questions

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP has a full transparency channel, so see-through backgrounds and soft edges are kept.

Is the conversion lossless?

No. WebP made here is lossy at the quality you choose. At High the difference is very hard to see.

How much smaller will the file be?

Photographic PNGs often shrink by 80% or more. Simple flat graphics shrink much less.

Will text in a screenshot stay sharp?

At High, yes for practical purposes. At Low, small text gets slightly soft.

Can I use WebP everywhere a PNG works?

On websites, yes. For email, documents and older software, keep using PNG.
