PNG to JPG

Convert PNG to JPG to make a picture much smaller, or to satisfy a form that only takes JPG.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Tap Choose PNG files and select one or more files.
  2. Leave the quality on High, or choose Medium for a smaller file.
  3. Press Convert to JPG, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.

Why convert PNG to JPG

PNG records every pixel exactly. That is ideal for a logo and wasteful for a photograph, where no one can see the difference between exact and nearly exact. JPG stores the nearly exact version in a fraction of the space.

A typical pictureAs PNGAs JPG, High quality
Phone photo, 12 megapixels15 to 25 MB3 to 5 MB
Full-screen game or video screenshot3 to 6 MB400 to 900 KB
Photo exported from an editor at 1920 × 10802 to 4 MB300 to 600 KB

The other reason is acceptance. Many upload forms for identity photos, listings and applications take JPG and nothing else.

What changes in the picture

  • Transparent areas turn white. JPG cannot store transparency. A cut-out logo gets a white rectangle behind it.
  • Fine detail is approximated. At High quality this is hard to see in a photo. Around sharp text and thin lines a faint haze can appear.
  • The size in pixels stays the same unless you choose a smaller one.

When to keep the PNG

Do not convert screenshots of text, diagrams, line drawings or pixel art if they need to stay crisp, and do not convert anything whose transparent background matters. For those, make the PNG itself smaller with compress PNG.

If the JPG will be edited again later, keep the PNG as your master copy. Every time a JPG is opened, changed and saved, a little more detail is lost. That does not happen with PNG.

Choosing the quality

High suits photos you will keep or print. Medium is right for web pages, email and chat and usually halves the file again. Low is for strict upload limits. If you need to hit an exact number of kilobytes, compress image can aim for a size directly.

Questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG approximates fine detail. At High quality the difference is very hard to see in a photo. It shows more on sharp text and line art.

What happens to a transparent background?

It becomes white, because JPG has no transparency.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They are two spellings of one format. Files ending .jpg and .jpeg are identical in kind.

How much smaller will my file be?

For photos, commonly five to ten times smaller. For flat graphics the saving is smaller and the PNG may even win.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes. Select them together. They are converted in turn and saved as one ZIP.
