JPG to WebP
Convert JPG to WebP to make the photos on a website lighter without making them look worse.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to convert JPG to WebP
- Tap Choose JPG files and select one or more files.
- Choose a quality. Medium is a sound choice for web pages.
- Press Convert to WebP, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.
Why websites use WebP
Pictures are usually the heaviest part of a web page. WebP stores a photograph in noticeably less space than JPG at the same visual quality: a quarter to a third less is typical. On a page with twenty photos, that can take megabytes off the download, which visitors on mobile data feel directly.
Page speed tools flag this too. The advice to “serve images in modern formats” is asking for exactly this conversion.
Where WebP works
| Place | Shows WebP? |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera | Yes, for years |
| Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac | Yes, since iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur (2020) |
| WordPress, Shopify, Wix and other site builders | Yes |
| Email newsletters | Unreliable. Several mail programs do not show it |
| Older desktop software and upload forms | Often not |
For pictures on a website, WebP is safe. For pictures sent by email or handed to other people, JPG remains the dependable choice.
Choosing the quality
- High for hero images, portfolios and product photos that people zoom into.
- Medium for article pictures, thumbnails and backgrounds. This is where most of the saving comes from.
- Low for decorative pictures that sit behind text or are shown very small.
Size in pixels matters as much as format. A photo straight from a camera is several times wider than any screen shows it. Choosing Up to 1920 pixels while converting often saves more than the change of format does.
Keep the JPG
WebP made here is lossy, like JPG, so the conversion costs a small amount of quality. Keep the original JPG as the master and make the WebP from it. If you later need a different size or quality, go back to the JPG, not to the WebP.
If the browser cannot make WebP
Creating a WebP relies on the browser. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can do it. Some versions of Safari cannot, and the page tells you so plainly if yours is one of them. In that case, use another browser for this step. Reading WebP back is covered by WebP to JPG, and PNG artwork by PNG to WebP.
Questions
How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
Typically a quarter to a third at the same visual quality. The exact saving depends on the picture.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
A little, as with any lossy format. At High it is not visible. Always convert from the original JPG, not from a copy already compressed.
Do all browsers show WebP?
All current ones do, including Safari since 2020.
Is WebP good for search ranking?
Faster pages help visitors, and speed is one of many signals search engines use. WebP is one way to make pages faster, not a guarantee of ranking.
Why does the page say my browser cannot create WebP?
A few browsers can display WebP but cannot write it. Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox to convert.
