Compress image to 100 KB

Make a photo or a scanned page fit under 100 KB. The limit is already set: choose the picture and press Compress.

This free online tool to compress an image to 100 KB runs in your browser, with nothing to install and no account. Add several photos to bring each one under 100 KB in one go. How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to compress an image to 100 KB

  1. Tap Choose pictures and select the photo. You can select several.
  2. A size limit is already chosen, with 100 in the box. Change the number if your form asks for something else.
  3. Press Compress. The result shows the size before and after.
  4. Press Save picture. The original file is not changed.

Each picture is saved as a JPG at the best quality that fits under 100 KB. The limit is counted with 1,024 bytes to the KB, as Windows and nearly all upload forms count, so 100 KB allows up to 102,400 bytes.

The line under the result rounds in units of 1,000 bytes, so a file close to the limit can read a little higher there than it does in Windows. If a form still refuses the file, type a slightly smaller number, such as 97, and compress again.

What fits in 100 KB

One hundred kilobytes is roomy for a portrait and tight for a page of text. It is the usual limit for identity documents, certificates and mark sheets on government and university portals.

PictureSize in pixels that looks good under 100 KB
A face photoAbout 800 to 1000 pixels wide
An identity card or a driving licenceAbout 1000 pixels wide
A full page of printed textAbout 800 to 1000 pixels wide, and only if the page is evenly lit

When a picture cannot reach 100 KB by quality alone, it is also reduced in pixels, and the result says so.

Scanned documents and ID cards

The test for a document is whether the smallest print can still be read. A few things help more than any setting:

  • Fill the frame with the document. Table-top around the edges uses up the allowance. Trim it with crop image.
  • Even light matters. Shadows and glare are detail as far as the file is concerned, and they cost kilobytes.
  • Check the result at full size before uploading. If the small print has gone soft, the page needs a larger limit or a tighter crop.

If the portal accepts PDF, a multi-page document is better sent as one file: make it with image to PDF and reduce it with compress PDF.

Pictures for email and the web

Outside forms, 100 KB is a sensible budget for a picture inside an email or on a web page: small enough to load at once on a slow connection, large enough to look right at the width of a phone screen.

For those uses, change Save as to WebP, which looks noticeably better than JPG at the same size, and set Size in pixels to the width the picture will actually be shown at.

KB and MB

100 KB is about a tenth of a megabyte, and a phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, so expect the file to shrink to a few percent of what it was. If a limit is given in MB instead, KB to MB converts between the two and explains why Windows and upload forms sometimes disagree.

For a tighter limit, use compress image to 50 KB. For any other figure, the general compress image tool takes whatever number you type.

Questions

How do I compress an image to 100 KB?

Choose the picture and press Compress. The limit of 100 KB is already filled in. The picture is saved as a JPG at the best quality that fits.

How do I reduce a JPG from 2 MB to 100 KB?

The same way. A 2 MB photo is reduced in quality and, if needed, in pixels until it is under 100 KB. The result tells you its new size in pixels.

Will text in a scanned document stay readable?

Usually, if the document fills the frame and is evenly lit. Check the small print in the result. If it is blurred, crop closer or ask whether a larger file is allowed.

Can I compress a PNG to 100 KB?

Yes. It is saved as a JPG, which suits photos and scans. To keep a screenshot or logo as PNG, use the compress PNG tool.

Is the result exactly 100 KB?

It is at or just under 100 KB, never over, counting 1,024 bytes to the KB.
