How to convert WebP to PDF

Why pictures arrive as WebP
WebP is a format made for websites. It gives smaller files than JPG or PNG, so many sites serve their pictures as WebP, and that is what the browser saves when you choose “Save image as”. The trouble starts afterwards: print shops, older office software and many upload forms do not take WebP.
A PDF is accepted nearly everywhere and prints at a predictable size. It also keeps a set of pictures together in one file, in a fixed order, which loose image files cannot do.

The quality setting is high, so the change is hard to see, but it is a second round of compression. Start from the WebP you saved, not from a copy that has already been converted once.
Choosing a page size

A margin adds white space around each picture, which helps if the pages will be printed or punched for a binder.
Good to know
- Text in the pictures stays a picture. It cannot be selected or searched in the PDF.
- If all you need is an ordinary picture file, WebP to JPG is simpler, and WebP to PNG keeps a transparent background.
- To mix WebP with PNG, JPG or HEIC pictures in one PDF, use image to PDF.
Questions
Can I put several WebP pictures in one PDF?
Yes. Select them all at once or add them a few at a time. They become pages in the order shown in the list, which you can rearrange.
Does converting WebP to PDF lose quality?
A very small amount. Each picture is stored as a JPG at a high quality setting and at its full size in pixels.
What happens to an animated WebP?
Its first frame becomes the page. A PDF page cannot hold animation.
What happens to a transparent background?
It becomes white, like the paper of a printed page.
Why can't I just rename the file to .pdf?
Renaming changes the name, not the contents. The file would still be a WebP picture, and a PDF reader would report it as damaged.
