Passport photo size
Crop a portrait to the shape of a passport photo: 35 × 45 mm, which most countries use, or 2 × 2 inches for the United States. The frame is locked to the shape you choose.
This free online passport photo cropper runs in your browser, with nothing to install and no account. How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to crop a photo to passport size
- Tap Choose a picture and select a portrait taken against a plain, light background.
- Under Shape, leave Passport photo, 35 × 45 mm, or choose the one your country uses.
- Drag the frame over the face, and drag its orange corner until the head fills the right share of the height.
- Press Crop, then Save picture.
The crop gives the picture the right shape. It does not judge the photo: the background, the lighting and the expression are still up to you, and the office that receives it has the final say.
Passport photo sizes by country
| Country or document | Printed size | Shape to choose |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 35 × 45 mm | Passport photo, 35 × 45 mm |
| Schengen visa and most European Union countries | 35 × 45 mm | Passport photo, 35 × 45 mm |
| Australia | 35 × 45 mm | Passport photo, 35 × 45 mm |
| United States | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | US passport photo, 2 × 2 in |

Requirements change, and visa photos sometimes differ from passport photos for the same country. Check the current rules of the office you are applying to before you print or upload.
Passport photo size in pixels
A size in millimeters becomes a size in pixels once you know the print resolution. Photo prints are normally made at 300 pixels per inch, and some offices ask for 600.
| Printed size | At 300 dpi | At 600 dpi |
|---|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 pixels | 827 × 1063 pixels |
| 2 × 2 in | 600 × 600 pixels | 1200 × 1200 pixels |
| 50 × 70 mm | 591 × 827 pixels | 1181 × 1654 pixels |
| 33 × 48 mm | 390 × 567 pixels | 780 × 1134 pixels |
Cropping keeps the pixels of the original, so the cropped picture is usually larger than these figures. To bring it to an exact size, such as 413 × 531, use resize image after cropping. In inches, 35 × 45 mm is 1.38 × 1.77 in, and in centimeters it is 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
How much of the frame the head should fill
Passport offices measure the head from the chin to the top of the hair, and reject photos where it is too small or too large.
- 35 × 45 mm, United Kingdom: the head should measure 29 to 34 mm, which is roughly two thirds to three quarters of the height of the picture.
- 2 × 2 in, United States: the head should measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches, which is between half and two thirds of the height.
Leave a little space above the hair, keep the face centred, and include the top of the shoulders. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, in even light that leaves no shadow on the face or the wall behind.
Photos for online forms
Online applications usually ask for the same shape with a limit on the file. A typical pair of rules is a photo of about 200 × 230 pixels between 20 and 50 KB, with a signature of 10 to 20 KB beside it, but every form states its own.
- Crop to the shape here.
- Set the size in pixels with resize image, if the form gives one.
- Bring the file under the limit with compress image to 50 KB, or 20 KB for a signature.
Questions
What is the size of a passport photo?
35 × 45 mm in most countries, including the United Kingdom, the Schengen area and Australia. The United States uses 2 × 2 inches.
What is 35 × 45 mm in pixels?
413 × 531 pixels at 300 dpi, the usual print resolution, or 827 × 1063 pixels at 600 dpi.
What is passport size in cm and inches?
3.5 × 4.5 cm, which is 1.38 × 1.77 inches. The US size is 2 × 2 inches, or 5.1 × 5.1 cm.
Does this check that my photo will be accepted?
No. It gives the photo the right shape. Background, lighting, expression and head size are judged by the office that receives it.
Does cropping reduce the quality?
No. The pixels inside the frame are kept exactly as they are. A JPG is saved again at high quality, which has no visible effect.
Can I use a selfie?
Most passport offices advise against it, because a phone held at arm's length distorts the face. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 meters away.
